Evening rain lily (Cooperia drummondii) is a member of the Amaryllis family and also goes by the common name of Evening Star Rain Lily. This plant is also synonymous with Cooperia chlorosolen, Zephyranthes brazosensis and Zephyranthes herbertiana. As the common names imply, these flowers appear in the evening and are triggered by soil moisture. They create a magical display, especially when large numbers of the plant are present. Evening rain lilies are a great addition to any wild space and can also be easily grown in beds or planters.
This perennial is native to portions of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The bulbs are dormant during winter and can remain that way through spring. The most frequent flowering takes place from mid-summer through fall, when they appear one to three days following rainfall. The blossoms measure 1 to 2 inches in diameter and rest atop stalks that are typically 12 inches tall. The flowers remain open for 2 to 4 days before turning pink and disappearing. Pollinated flowers are replaced by three-lobed pods that erupt to spread seeds two to three weeks later.
These are VERY easy to grow, especially since they will tolerate almost any type of soil, including caliche and clay. They should be planted 2 to 3 inches deep, in full sun and watered once to settle the soil. Do not plant them in a location that remains wet or where water pools. They are hardy from zones 7a to 10 however they also perform very well in planters that can be protected from colder temperatures.

Not only did I receive my order promptly and well packaged, but there were more bulbs than I expected. Rechecking my receipt, I found a note saying they had included a few extras and hoped that I'd enjoy them. Wow! So unexpected during these tough times, when everything has gone up in price! Such an excellent seller with already reasonable prices!
