This is a beautifully detailed fossil of a calamite plant, the first tree-like plant to grow on land.
I found this specimen in Eastern Oklahoma, within an outcrop of rock dating to the Carboniferous Period. The tree that provided the mold for this fossil died some 300 million years ago.
Calamites, often referred to as "horsetail trees", grew to a height of 100 feet. The modern horsetail plant is the only direct relative of the calamites alive today.
This fossil was created when sediment found its way into the hollow inner cavity of the calamite trunk and solidified, preserving a 360 degree impression of the plant interior.
The piece measures roughly 4 X 3-1/2 X 2 inches (12 X 9 X 2 cm) and weighs 21 ounces (594 grams).
