These petrified wood specimens are very well preserved examples of a now extinct tree species that lived around 40 million years ago. Only found in a handful of Texas counties and Louisiana parishes, Mennegoxylon jonesii is more commonly known as "snakewood", as the cell structure resembles snake skin. I collected these from a location in Brazos County, Texas where the Manning Formation was exposed. The high quality specimens have been cut and polished at one end but all other sides have been left untouched.
The level of preservation seen in the pieces is higher than most snakewood specimens and the detailed cell structures are clearly visible thanks to the high silica content. These are being made individually.
Piece A measures 1.6 x 1.1 x .7 inches and weighs .99 ounces. The cut and polished face is 1.6 x .7 inches.
Piece B measures 1.8 x 1.7 x .7 inches and weighs 1.55 ounces. The cut and polished face is 1.7 x .7 inches.
