The patterns seen in these hackberry tree slices are the result of a process known as "spalting". This occurs when wood is exposed to environmental conditions that allow fungi and bacteria to colonize and live within the tree trunk or branch. Over time, the organisms produce the lines and streaks that make spalted wood a much sought after material. The slices in this listing are completely natural and no substances have been applied to the wood. They have also been allowed to dry for over a year so no checks or cracks should be expected in the future.
