Sea Beans / Drift Seeds, Large 24 Piece Assortment - Free US Shipping

$35.00

This is a chance to grab a great assortment of drift seeds, also known as sea beans. Some of these items began their journey from as far away as the Amazon Rainforest, but all ultimately washed-up on the beaches of Texas. In addition to being great conversation pieces, the beans can be incorporated into many different craft projects.

These are often overlooked by beachcombers and many are amazed when they learn the story behind each one.

A good example would be that of the hamburger bean, also known as deer's eye and Ojo de Buey. In tropical regions of the world, these are considered good luck and are carried as protection from the "evil eye".

Of the countless legends involving the sea heart, this is my favorite: It is said Christopher Columbus found one of these beans on a beach in Spain and that this inspired him to set sail to the West. These are still referred to as "Columbus beans" in some parts of the world.

There will be 10 different drift seed varieties represented in the 24 piece set included with each order:

Sea Heart - Seed of a tropical vine also known as "Monkey Ladder" - (4 pcs)
Tropical Almond - (4 pcs)
Water Hickory - (3 pcs)
Hamburger Bean - (3 pcs)
Tropical Walnut - (3 pcs)
Sea Coconut - Seed of a palm native to Trinidad - (2 pcs)
Anchovy Pear - An evergreen fruit tree native to Jamaica, Central America, and Colombia - (2 pcs)
Starnut Palm - (1 piece)
Manchineel - Seed of a fruit known as the "Beach Apple" - (1 piece)
Nickerbean - Also known as "sea pearl" - (1 piece)

All seeds will be chosen from the groups shown in the photos. These were all rinsed in fresh water, and some were lightly scrubbed, but they are otherwise as they were found on the sand.

I have been asked if these seeds will germinate if planted, and the short answer is, possibly. Though I cannot guarantee that any one seed will sprout, success stories can be found online along with articles describing how to grow plants from sea beans. Seeds having a hard shell (sea hearts, hamburger beans and nickerbeans) will typically have the best chances of germinating.
