Crinoid Stem Fossils, 8 Ounces to 3 pounds Bulk - Free US Shipping

$18.00

The crinoid stems in this listing are fossilized portions of animals that lived approximately 300 million years ago in a sea that covered most of Texas. These are sometimes called "Texas Pop Rocks" or "Indian Pop Rocks" because they can explode, much like popcorn, when thrown into an open fire. They have also been referred to as "Indian Beads" since they are known to have been worn by the indigenous people of North America. These fossils would be appreciated by the seasoned collector, educator or anyone interested in a obtaining a piece of the Earths prehistoric past.

This material is being made available in four different quantities: 8 ounces, 1 pound, 2 pounds and 3 pounds. The exact pieces that will be shipped are shown in the listing photographs. In general, diameters will range from .20 to .55 inches and they will be up to 1.5 inches in length, although a small number of the fossils will fall outside of this range.

The many of these crinoid stems are not the soft, limestone casts that are more commonly found. They were preserved when silicate minerals replaced the crinoid tissues giving many of them a somewhat crystalline appearance. They are also more colorful than many other crinoid fossils, especially when viewed wet. All have been washed and a small amount of the rock matrix that once held the fossils is present on a portion of the specimens. A small amount of dust will be present when these are received, the result of the pieces brushing against each other while in transit. Simply rinse and allow them to dry.
