Old Man Of The Andes Cactus, Large Oreocereus Trollii - Free US Shipping

$60.00

Oreocereus trollii is a plant native to the higher altitudes of the Andes Mountains. Although they have an appearance that is similar to other "Old Man" cacti, these are a bit rarer and have some features that set them apart.

Also known as Old Man of the Andes and Old Man of the Mountain, O. trollii is covered by the wooly hair indicative of all Old Man cacti. The hairs are actually modified spines that protect the plants from excessive sunlight as well as frost. Old Man of the Andes will typically grow no taller than 24 inches however they can have a large diameter when compared to other columnar cacti. These also produce "pups" at their base at a relatively young age and can form large clumps over time. The plant has a multitude of stiff, dark spines that extend past the wool, giving it a distinctive appearance.

The listing photos show all sides of the three cacti that are being made available individually, each growing in a 6 inch container. They are between 8-1/4 and 8-1/2 inches tall and are 3 to 3-1/2 inches in diameter. These measurements do not include the length of the spines. Each cactus will be shipped with a minimal amount of soil and no pots will be included.

These succulents are hardy to 20 degrees Fahrenheit but exposure to temperatures lower than 50 degrees should be limited. They should be placed in an area that receives a full day of bright indirect sunlight or a minimum of 5 hours direct morning through early afternoon sunlight. During warmer months of the year, the plant should be watered several days after the soil has fully dried. Water once per month during cooler months.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not use heat packs and we are not responsible for damage related to the plants being exposed to cold temperatures.
