Mammillaria surculosa is a rare and mounding cactus native to a small region in northern Mexico. These are relatively cold hardy and fast growing plants. Given their scarcity, they would make great additions to even the most comprehensive succulent collection.
The listing photos show examples of the three cluster sizes being made available. The smallest were photographed growing in their 2-1/4 inch square black pots. Medium clusters are shown in 3-1/2 inch green square containers and large clusters in their 4 inch round green pots. These will be shipped as shown. Single or multiple plants may form the cluster in a pot.
Yellow flowers typically appear on the clusters between spring and early summer and can be so numerous that they nearly conceal the cactus. Examples of the interesting flowers can be seen in the final two listing photos. The central spines are longer and darker than the radial spines and are hooked. With proper care, the small size clusters will grow to medium size in two years. It also takes about two years for the medium size clusters to reach the large cluster size shown in this listing.
These cacti require porous soil and we have found that a mix containing 60% standard cactus soil, 20% perlite and 20% sphagnum peat moss is ideal. Provide them with a full day of bright indirect sunlight and if possible direct sun for the first few hours of the day. Allow their soil to dry and remain that way for a week prior to watering during summer. Water less in spring and fall and only once every 6 weeks during winter. Although they can tolerate freezing temperatures for short periods of time, they should be kept above 45 degrees Fahrenheit if at all possible.
