The fossils offered in this listing were found in an eroded Central Texas streambed. These interesting and unusual pieces are very rare, and quite possibly unique to the location they were found. Their intriguing appearance make them perfect for display and would be appreciated by serious collectors as well as those seeking one of a kind natural items.
Although I have over 45 years of fossil collecting experience, these specimens proved to be unlike any that I had seen previously. Once collected, I immediately sought out assistance in an effort to determine exactly what these were. The Paleontological Society, an international organization devoted exclusively to the advancement of the science of paleontology, was asked to review the material. The response received from the reviewing member stated that he had only seen fossils similar to these on one other occasion and that these were preserved fragments of wood and other organic material.
Their composition is similar to sandstone or or a soft limestone with traces of iron also present. One particularly interesting aspect of these is that some of the fossils appear to be perpendicular to the layers of sedimentation.
A portion of this material is being made available in three different sizes, with the photos showing the exact pieces.
The smallest have been combined into a set of five pieces. The largest of these measures 3-3/4 x 3 x 1-1/2 inches and the smallest is 1-3/4 x 1-1/2 x 1 inch. The five pieces have a combined weight of 1 pound, 11 ounces.
The medium size fragment measures 7-1/2 x 5-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches and weighs 4 pounds, 3 ounces.
The largest piece is 9 x 9 x 4-1/2 inches and has a weight of 12 pounds, 5 ounces.
