Blue Agave Americana, 1, 2 or 4 Per Order - Free US Shipping

$20.00

The blue variety of Agave Americana is a resilient succulent that is native to portions of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico. This extremely drought tolerant agave can endure temperatures as low as 10 degrees (hardy to zone 8) and can even be grown in lightly shaded areas. It is most dramatic when added to the landscape, however it is also easily grown in containers.

These pups are available in two different sizes with the first three listing photos showing plants representative of all that are being offered.

The smaller agave were photographed with two plants in each of their 1 gallon pots pots. These will stand 4 to 7 inches tall and are available in your choice of 2 or 4 agave (the contents of 1 or 2 pots) per order.

Larger agave are shown planted individually in their 1 gallon pots. These will stand between 7 and 11 inches tall and are old enough to produce pups of their own. Your choice of 1 or 2 of these larger plants (the contents of either 1 or 2 pots) will be included with each order.

All plants have root systems that are well developed relative to their age and size and will ship bare root (without soil or pots). As shown in the photos, a portion of the leaves have been removed to reduce shipping costs and allows us to offer these agave at lower prices. These leaves will be replaced very quickly after the plants have become established in their new location.

The colors displayed by this variety of agave provide a great contrast to green plants that may be nearby. Mature Agave Americana can grow to be quite large and I have seen these reach a size of 15 feet in diameter. If planted in a container, the plant size will be regulated by the size of the pot. New growth appears in the form of vertical leaves that shoot upward from the top of the plant. These leaves eventually unfold and gracefully arch downward to create a layered effect. When combined with the steel-blue color, this gives the plant a striking appearance. They reproduce quickly with pups breaking the surface up to three feet away from the mother plant. If left in place, a thick cluster of agave will form over time. Two mature plants can be seen in the final listing photo.

These agave require almost zero care and will do very well in areas where few other plants can survive. When possible, the planting location should be one that receives full sun, although partial shade is acceptable. In more arid parts of the country they may be planted in any type of soil, however they should be provided well draining soil in wetter climates or if grown in a container. They should be watered once when initially planted but will thrive on naturally occurring rainwater thereafter. No fertilization is needed and maintenance is limited to removing the older leaves if desired.
