Native to Argentina, Tephrocactus articulatus var. diadematus is commonly known as Spruce Cone Cholla and Pine Cone Cactus. This is an unusual and easy to care for succulent that can grow to be 2 feet tall and will form clusters that are up to 4 feet in diameter.
These plants have greyish-blue to greyish-brown stem segments that resemble elongated pine cones. One to three new segments appear near the ends of the older growth each year, with the plant developing sprawling branches over time. Older plants resemble a stack of pine cones that are joined end-to-end. Most of these plants remain spineless, however a few thin, white spines may occur on some individuals as they grow older.
These are available as plants having one, two or three branches with the listing photographs showing plants representative of all that are available. They stand 2 to 4-1/2 inches above the soil and in general the height decreases as the number of stems increases. They were photographed growing in their 4 inch pots however neither the pots or soil will be shipped with the plants.
These cacti require full sun or very bright indirect light and they can tolerate temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Watering when the soil is dry during warmer months will increase their rate of growth. They should only be watered once per month when temperatures fall below 65 degrees.
